Having a loved one pass can be stressful enough. Being responsible for administering your loved one’s estate can add to the stress level. Probate is the legal process of settling the estate – filing the person’s will, identifying and paying creditors, paying taxes, and distributing the rest of the property under the person’s will – or if there is no will, under state law.

The process usually begins by filing a petition for probate (including the will), the notice of appointment as personal representative, and the personal representative’s bond. In Maryland, these are filed with the Register of Wills in the county where the person lived.
